I have a son in Middle School!

He graduated from elementary school this past June on the honor roll with a handful of awards. I was so proud of him. He is an amazing child and I am truly blessed to have him in my life.

Yesterday was the first day of school for him! Middle School, new school, new kids, new teachers, new everything! His dad and talked to him about the importance of it all over the summer and one last time as we all walked up the block to his new school together.
"You ok..?" I asked " Yeah...just a few butterflies in my tummy." he replied with a nervous smile. "Its cool...thats normal, you gonna have a great time! Just be yourself and dont brag about stuff ok" I say. "Ok mom"

But truth be told I was nervous also. My son was starting a new school. He is really smart and I never really have to worry about academics with him. But I do know that social issues can affect academic issues. I he doesnt like school because of school mates, it makes it that much harder to succeed. Medhane is an only child and I know sometimes has trouble relating to kids his own age, so I have been spending time and energy working on his social skills. "Dont mention to them that you are only nine, dont brag how smart you are, dont be over judgmental, dont brag about traveling. Its ok to mention it if asked but always be humble about what you have and know that some people may get jealous so it is important how you frame things!" I repeated over and over to him.

I still cant believe I have a son in Middle School!
